Malaysia has called for greater military cooperation with the Philippines, Indonesia, and Brunei to ensure safety in the Sulu Sea.

Malaysia's defense minister urged joint patrols in the waterways off Sabah, similar to what is conducted by Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia in the Strait of Malacca.

His comments come following a rise in kidnapping cases in the waterways where tugboats are increasingly being targeted by gunmen from southern Philippines.

Just last Friday, four Indonesian sailors who were part of a tugboat crew, were kidnapped in Tawi-Tawi by suspected Abu Sayyaf members.
